Founder of Crawford Planing Mill and Well Known Citizen Passes Away Monday Afternoon
Eli Wagner Crawford, one of Morgan county's highly respected citizens, passed away at his home in this city yesterday after several weeks illness.
Mr. Crawford was born in Madison county, Kentucky, Nov. 21, 1849. He came to this county in 1868 and farmed north of Jacksonville for a short time, later moving to this city where he engaged in the carpentery trade till 1878 when he became thw owner of a small planing mill which later became the Central Plaining Mill Company. In December of 1923 he retired from the firm and the Crawford Lumber Company was incorporated.
The decedent was married on December 25, 1872, to Miss Henrietta Lindsay, who with the following children survive him: Thomas D., Mobile, Ala.; Mrs. Ella Mae Stevens, Ft. Myers, Fla.; Walter A., Lee R. and Clara L. Shibe, all of Jacksonville. One son, Jesse preceded him in death. One brother, Thomas B. Crawford, Slater, Mo., and one sister, Mrs. Martha Martin, of Lexington, Ky., survive him. There are also the following grandchildren: Byron and Gerald Shibe, Lawrence Crawford and Clara Jeanette Stevens.
Mr. Crawford was a member of the First Baptist church in this city and an active member of the following ledges: Wilbur Chapter, O.E.S., No. 358, Springfield Consistory, Jacksonville Council No. 5, Hospitaller Commandery No. 31, Harmony Lodge No. 3 and Jacksonville Chapter No. 3.
The remains were prepared for burial at the Gillham Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, Rev. L. M. Westrate officiating. Interment will be made in Diamond Grove Cemetery.
The Knights Templar will conduct the services at the grave.
