Union Civil War veteran and member of Eugene GAR Post 7. Mr. Brown served in Company D, 47th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Records show he was captured by Confederate forces in Atlanta on July 22, 1864 and confined at the infamous Andersonville P.O.W. camp.
The death date on the headstone and the birth year is in question. The birth year could be as early as 1831.

In 2006 the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War replaced the damaged headstone with a new marker supplied by the VA.
