Thomas Lowrance Cooper, 74, passed away Sunday May 3, 2015 at his home. He was born October 10th, 1940.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mary Ruth Cooper; daughter, Patricia Lee Cooper; son, Jack Lee Cooper; brothers, Ben Ellis Cooper and Joe Houston Cooper.
Tom served as a police officer for 30 years with 20 years of that services as a Big Stone Gap Police officer where he retired in 2010 as investigator and Captain.
He loved helping his community and especially the children. He was the D.A.R.E. officer for many years. Tom was a lifetime member of the Appalachia Rescue Squad and a rescue diver. He was a member of the masonic lodge and attended the Christian Life Church until he became too sick to leave home.
Tom is survived by his wife, Carolyn Sue Cooper of the home; 2 step daughters, Barbara Ann Thomas of Keokee, VA, Rebekah Lee Bush and husband Anthony of Stickleyville, VA; 3 grandsons, Andrew Thomas Doan and Zachary Kaiden Bush, Zachery Wilborn; daughter, Mary Bernice Wilborn of Charlotte Court House, VA; 2 brothers, Sid Cooper and wife Linda of Big Stone Gap, VA, Jack Cooper and wife Debbie of Miami, FL; sister, Doni Ann Duckett of Danville, IL.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm Thursday, May 7th at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 1 pm Friday May 8th , 2015 at the Derby United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rose officiating. Burial will follow in the Glencoe Cemetery, Big Stone Gap.
