Born in Portsmouth, Iowa, third child and eldest son of Elmer G. and Ellen E. (Benden) Spracklin.

In 1941, John married Gilda G. Gramkow, they had 10 children. Gilda passed away in 1989.

John enlisted for military service in April 1942 and was honorably discharged on 31 October 1945.

He was an original member of the First Special Service Force (FSSF) serving in Maintenance Company and later served with the 474th Infantry Regiment when the FSSF disbanded. He served in various campaigns including Aleutians, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe earning several medals and citations.

John worked as a meat cutter in Council Bluffs, IA and for Safeway in Omaha, NE; his father-in-law, Harry Gramkow, had also been a butcher at one time at the family store.

In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force, in recognition of its superior service during World War II.
