Born to Bill and Delores Burch, he was a former sheriff in Wise County. He was a member of Newark Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Billy Burch, and brother-in-law, Chris Batterton.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy Burch of Fort Worth; his son, Dakota Burch; four daughters, Traci Moore, Keri Stump, Amy Wilson and Brittany Burch; his parents of Newark; three brothers, Troy, Jimmy and Lesley Burch; three sisters, Sherry Underwood, Shirley Jones and Sharon Batterton; five grandchildren, Logan, Ethan, Mia, Cohen and Reade; and numerous nieces nephews, cousins and friends.
His law enforcement career began as a deputy for Wise County Sheriff Rook Ramsey in 1980 and ended 12 years later. Burch's career included stints as a patrolman for the Bridgeport and Decatur police departments and five months as chief of police in Boyd. He was serving as chief deputy in the Wise County Sheriff's Department in December 1987, when Sheriff Ray Aaron resigned. He was appointed sheriff by commissioners and won election to the post in 1988. During his five-year tenure as sheriff, Burch developed a reputation as being tough on drug labs, filing more than 32 drug manufacturing cases in just 18 months.
