Martha "Mottie" Harman Benson was the daughter of James Richard Benson and Frances "Fannie" Cromwell Hodges, born July 4, 1893 in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

On Dec 2, 1919, in Washington, D.C., 26-year old Mottie, married 41-year old Evan Morewood Jones, a Welsh immigrant who was employed as the Superintendent of the sheet tin and jobbing mills of the Bethlehem Steel Company, Sparrows Point, Maryland. Mottie was a nurse working at Johns Hopkins Hospital in, D.C.

In 1920, Evan and Mottie moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania where Evan took a job as the Manager of LaLance and Grosjeans Manufacturing Company. While living in Harrisburg Mottie gave birth to their two children. Their son, Evan Morewood Jones, II in 1920 and their daughter, Gwendolyn Marguerite Jones in 1923.

In 1930, the family moved to Ohio where Evan took a job as a Manager of a Steel Plant; Evan worked for the rest of his life in the Steel industry. Mottie and Evan lived in Ohio until their deaths.
