According to direct descendant Charles Graham, John McDowell's father Joseph McDowell married Margaret O'Neil in Ulster (Northern) Ireland in 1739. They emigrated to Pennsylvania, America, and then settled in Virginia where they had the following children:
1. Hugh McDowell c. 1742-30 March 1772
2. Charles McDowell 28 October 1743- 31 March 1815; (married Grace Bowman)
3.Hannah McDowell(married a Chisman)
4.JOHN MCDOWELL 1751-24 March 1822 (married Hannah Keller)
5.Margaret McDowell (married Robert McElrath
6. Joseph McDowell Jr. married Margaret Moffitt)
John distinguished himself fighting in the American Revolution, as did his father and brothers.
Sadly, John and Hannah lost their three sons and a nephew in a house fire in 1812.
