Barbara J. Althoff, 80, of Lima, passed away at 7:25 PM on Friday, April 24, 2015, at her residence.
She was born on November 5, 1934, in Lima, Ohio, to Howard and Elsie (Hawk) Gross, who both preceded her in death. On August 21, 1955, she married Henry L. "Doc" Althoff, who preceded her in death on November 19, 2007.
Barbara was a 1952 graduate of Lima Central High School. She was a volunteer for over 30 years in the St. Rita's Hospital Gift Shop. She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary, having served as president, vice president. and various other positions. She attended the First Church of the Nazarene for over 40 years, and also had attended the Lima Baptist Temple. She was an avid Ohio State Buckeye football fan. She also enjoyed making crafts, collecting beanie babies, painting, and felinology.
Surviving are daughter Becky Lynne (Kevin) Messick of Boca Raton, FL; grandson Phillip S. Messick of Lima; two sisters Dorothy Jarvis and Shirley Wolford, both of Lima; two sisters-in law Argyle Gross and Louise Gross, both of Lima; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by son Jamie Althoff and three brothers Al, James, and Robert Gross.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 29, 2015, from 2 to 8 PM at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services, Eastside Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10 AM on Thursday, April 30, 2015, at Chiles-Laman Funeral and Cremation Services Eastside Chapel, with Rev. Gary Hohman officiating. Interment will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery, New Hampshire.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Allen County Humane Society or charity of the donor's choice.
