Born on 9 September, 1834 in Pymatuning Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, David Allen McKnight was the son of Mercer County natives, Andrew and Malissa (Willyard) McKnight.

A Rootsweb biography of David A. McKnight indicates that he was born in Clarksville, Mercer County, and that he was the husband of Malissa (Willard) McKnight (born 19 March 1843 in Greenville, Mercer County; married on 6 June 1861; died 18 July 1919).

CIVIL WAR MILITARY SERVICE

David Allen McKnight enrolled for military service at Mercer County, Pennsylvania on 18 September 1861 with Company B of the 57th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was Honorably Discharged at Brandy Station, Virginia on 30 December 1863, where he re-enlisted that same day as a Corporal.

Captured by Confederate forces during the Battle of the Wilderness on 5 May 1864, he survived internment as a Prisoner of War at the notorious Andersonville Prison Camp, and was recorded as being present as a "Paroled Prisoner" on his company's muster out roll on 28 February 1865 (Annapolis, Maryland).

He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 20 June 1865 and Honorably Discharged on 29 June 1865.

AFTER THE WAR
Occupation: Farmer.

David Allen McKnight died of aging-related disease complications in Pymatuning Township, Mercer County, Pennsylvania on 23 June 1917, and was interred at the West Side Cemetery in Sharpsville, Mercer County on 26 June 1917. Fred McKnight was the informant on his death certificate. J.V. Davis of Sharpsville handled his funeral arrangements.
