The Reverend Elwood Craven Yerkes was the youngest child of eight, and youngest son of six born to Hiram Yerkes and Anna Lewis Yerkes. He is No. 635 in Chronicle of the Yerkes Family by Josiah Granville Leach.

He attended the State Normal School at Millersville and then taught public school for a year before he entered the Philadelphia Methodist Episcopal Conference, where he was a pastor of the following churches: Evansburg, Kennett Square, Upland, Jenkintown and Jarrettown, Georgetown and Gap, Millersburg, Belmont, in West Philadelphia, Coatesville, Pen Argyl, St. Paul's, in Lancaster, and Catasauqua, and at the end he was at Messiah, Philadelphia.

On 19 Nov 1873, at Penn Valley, Bucks County, PA, he married Abigail Lippincott Hepburn (called Abbie), b. 12 May 1852, the daughter of Stacy Tantom Hepburn by his wife Sarah Ann Vansant. The Reverend and Mrs. Yerkes had two daughters.
