LIEUT. WM. L. WHEELER'S PLANE CRASHES TO EARTH IN MASS OF FLAMES
Wm. L. Wheeler, son of Lewis Mason Wheeler and wife, Estella Ruth Kemper Wheeler, former residents of this city, lost his life on Thursday [Oct. 8, 1925] of last week at Chanute Flying Field, near Ranoul, Ill. William was a First Lieutenant in the U. S. Air Service. He was piloting his plane a De Haviland 4-B, and the plane burst into flames, presumably from some engine trouble, when he was 25 feet in the air. The flames immediately enveloped the machine and Wheeler had no chance to escape, although a passenger, Cecil S. Burger, a private leaped to the ground and was only slightly injured. Lieut. Wheeler was preparing to land the airplane when the fire started. He was burned to death.
Lieut Wheeler was 34 years of age, was married, and his home was in Oskaloosa [Barton Co., MO]. His parents and his brother Fred live in Cairo, Ill., where Fred is engaged in the lumber business. In addition to his parents and brother Fred, he leaves a sister, Grace, who is married and lives in California, and also a younger brother.
The father was in the grocery business here for some time about ten years ago, and the family will be remembered by many of our readers. William had been in the air service for several years, and was one of the most popular officers in the service.
Many warm friendships were established by the family during their residence here, an those friends join with us in expressing deep regret at this deplorable accident, and extend to the stricken family sincere condolence.
NOTE: He was married to Fannie Ellen Rouse, b. 9/4/1893, d.8/6/1991 on 6/1/1915 at the Methodist Church in Nevada, MO.They had 2 daughters,Edna June, b. 1/21/1917 and Mary Elizabeth, b. 3/30/1918.
