Aged Plainfield Man Fatally Injured By Auto
Samuel K. Fishburn Struck by Machine in Newville Road
Rites Planned
Samuel K. Fishburn, a well-known retired farmer residing at Plainfield, was accidentally struck and killed by an automobile Friday night while walking along the roadway near the center of the village. He was 83 years of age.
The accident happened across the street from the office of Dr. D. W. Van Camp. The victim was taken first to the doctor's office and then removed to Carlisle Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, which consisted of a fractured skull and internal injuries.
The driver of the auto was Edgar C. Myers, aged 22, of R. D. 2, Carlisle. He told the coroner, who investigated the case, that he was blinded by the lights of an oncoming car and did not see Mr. Fishburn until within a few feet of him. He then swerved his car, but a fender hit the aged man and threw him to the side of the roadway. Myers stopped and took him to the doctor's office.
Mr. Fishburn is survived by a son, Fred C. Fishburn, of Plainfield, and three grandchildren. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Plainfield where for many years he took an especial interest in singing. He was a member of the Senior Order of American Mechanics.
The deceased was the only son of Adam and Ellen (Kenyon) Fishburn. He was born December 19, 1854, on the homestead farm near Plainfield. He attended the public schools and at the age of 18 entered Chambersburg Academy. In 18979, he was married to Annie M. Lee, of Dickinson Township, and they had two children, Mary Lee and Fred C. He engaged in farming all his life and was of an affable disposition, having many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:30 from the J. R. Shulenberger parlors, West High Street. Interment will be made at Ashland Cemetery. Friends are invited to call on Sunday evening, 7 to 9, at the funeral parlors.
