Charles J. Mabus, 72, of 1616 W. White Street, C. died Tuesday, November 19, 2001, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana, Illinois. Memorial services will be at a later date. Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, Champaign, Illinois, handled local arrangements. It is difficult for me to write a biography about Charles J. Mabus. What can be said, he was not famous, nor well known, yet his friendship traveled all around the world. I met him through web tv, he seemed to spring up out of nowhere to express his opinion on Tommy Hillfiger. Silly, and yet the beginning something that would last for an eternity. He was an old man, he lived in the basement, he always delighted in going to Taffy's Restaurant and pinching the waitresses. Very often the Schwans man would bring corn dogs to his door. Very often on easter he had only Peeps and Pepsi to celebrate the day. He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and a veteran of the Korean War. He smoked. THis smoking led to severe copd and an oxygen tank which accompanyed him wherever he went. He would never miss Memorial Day, if he could he marched in all the parades, if he couldn't he at least carried flags to the graves and remembed his fellow soldiers. He was a true American and patriot. He was the only one who called me after the twin towers went down and he could hardly breath as he attempted to talk. He was a Hero, perhaps not the kind you think of , yet on his bed as he lay in the hospital, and mind you he drug his web tv in there, he let people come and interview him for anti-smoking campaignes. His grandson loved him, he was his pal, his buddy, his confident. He shed tears at the old man's demise, as did we all. Unfortunately Charles J. Mabus was cremated and I do not realy know where he is, but I do know he is still living....in the hearts of all his friends. He went to his high school reunion one year in the state of Michigan, he was so sad when he came home, perhaps the memories of his youth were too much, yet the song from a movie "I had the time of my life" comes to mind. He had so much life for one so frail and he is missed.
