Udolphus Cobb was a bond boy who took the Cobb name and lived with Archie and Rebecca Cobb. Bond boys were usually children whose parents owed a debt and as such worked to pay off the debt.In turn they were taken care of by the family. In this case Udolphus took the Cobb name, much like adoption.He is named in the 1856 will of Archibald Cobb. Udolphus Cobb served in the Civil War as a substitute for Joseph Benson.Abraham Lincoln's enrollment Act of 1863 allowed for a draftee to pay a substitution fee for another soldier to take his place. This enrollment fee was $300 or about $5000 in today's money.Unfortunately, Udolphus was killed for his service at the Battle of Fort Sanders, Knoxville,TN.-Allie Nelson
