On June 3, 1946, three years after her high school graduation, she was married to Cody Welty in Enid, Oklahoma.
By 1950 the family was settled in Port Chicago, California where Cody had come to look for work. They had two children Larry and Mary. In the late 50's/early 60's they moved into a home in West Pittsburg, California; they then had their last child Glenda.
Maxine enjoyed travelling and made many visits back to Coalgate to spend time with family and friends. She kept up with the news by subscribing to the Coalgate newspaper and would cut out articles of people she knew.
She worked for several years at the California Department of Employment in Pittsburg and was remembered fondly by co-workers.
Maxine was a faithful church goer and she was a member of Pittsburg Baptist Church in Bay Point, California. She taught the older women's class, sang in the choir and helped with Vacation Bible School.
Maxine enjoyed making dolls and crochet, until arthritis stopped her. She loved flowers and grew roses and beautiful hydrangeas in the front yard.
Sadly she was a victim of Alzheimer's and her memory began to fade in the early 1990's. She eventually had to be moved to an elder care facility to be cared for properly. She died at Mt. Diablo Hospital with her family by her side.
