Sister Mary Alice was born to George Lyman Foley and Beatrice (Be’nard) Foley Jan. 6, 1923, in Montreal, Wis. She entered St. Rose Convent in 1940. Entering the field of education, Sister Mary Alice taught primary grades in elementary schools in Iowa, Montana, Washington and Wisconsin for 33 years. After leaving the classroom, she ministered to the elderly for a year and then was ward clerk at a hospital for a year in Superior, Wis. From 1981 to 1984, Sister Mary Alice worked with exceptional children in Freeport, Ill. She also served as library aide, secretary, tutor and teacher for several years in Ashland and Durand, Wis. In 1993, she retired to St. Rose Convent, before making her home at Villa St. Joseph in 2006.
Sister Mary Alice is survived by her Franciscan community; a sister-in-law, Gwen Foley of Milwaukee; a brother-in-law, Thomas Tucker of La Crosse; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Walter, Robert, Hamilton, Bernard and Joseph; and her sisters, Mae Marie McDonald, Edna Orin and Colleen Tucker.
Friends may call after 3:15 p.m. Monday, April 20, at St. Rose Convent, La Crosse. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. in Mary of the Angels Chapel. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the chapel. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, La Crosse.
