Although very young, Jerry enlisted in the Marines towards the end of World War II. He fought in Korea and in Vietnam. He was a decorated war hero, but he always felt his greatest achievement was to be honor as one of the 62 men who received a Battlefield Commission for saving the life of many during Vietnam, allowing Jerry to retire from The U.S. Marine Corps as a Captain after 24 years of service.
Jerry and Margaret moved back to their home town of Oswego in 1973, where he then went to work and retired 10 years later from Stone & Webster/ Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station. They relocated for a while in Homosassa, Fla., to enjoy great weather and friends, but came back home to settle for good in 2007.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret E. (Jackson) Martin; a daughter, Kathleen (William) Russo; two grandsons, Martin E. (Cindy) Russo and Richard A. (Amy) Russo; and one great-granddaughter, Lauren A. Russo; several nieces and nephews; and two sister-in-laws, Betty and Eleanor Martin.
Jerry is predeceased by his parents, Walter and Kathryn (Morley) Martin; brothers, Theodore, William, Raymond and Warren; a sister, Loretta; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, at the Nelson Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home, 11 W. Albany St.. Oswego.
