Roger Muilenburg is my mothers second cousin. His mother, Bernice Breen Muilenburg and my grandmother Geneva Cook Vander Ploeg are first cousins.

The following was taken from his Lifestory page:
Roger Muilenburg was a fun-loving jokester who tried each day to place a smile on the faces of the many people he loved. He was a hard worker who took great pride in providing for his family. Roger always regarded his children as his greatest accomplishment, and he was the happiest when he was in the loving company of his family.

The elder of two children, Roger grew up in Grand Rapids with company of his brother Dave. Their father provided for the family through his job as a commercial real estate and business broker. Roger attended West Side Christian School and Harrison Park before graduating from Union High School with the class of 1957. Following his graduation, he began working as a lifeguard at Richmond Park Pool. He owned several dogs throughout his youth, most of which he called "Coco."

In the year 1958, Roger went on a blind date with Shirley Harmsen. They easily fell into conversation, and they soon found themselves in love. After a two year courtship, they were married on November 4, 1960 at Alpine Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Following the wedding, they settled into a rental apartment next to the church. They later relocated to a rental house on Garfield NW. Eventually Roger and Shirley decided to leave Grand Rapids, and they built a new house at 106 Sunset Hills NW in Standale. Years later, they moved into a new home on Woodgate NW.

Roger and Shirley were blessed with five wonderful children. Shari, Todd, Kurt, Brad, and Beth Anne provided Roger with many of his happiest memories. He was a devoted father, and he was proud to provide for his family. In the early years of his marriage, Roger worked as a salesman/driver for Vernors, as a door-to-door salesman and also for Walter Hagen Golf Equipment. In the mid-sixties, he began working at Sears. This was the job that he would keep for the rest of his professional life until his retirement after thirty-two years.

Roger liked to stay busy. Even after his retirement, he began working for his sons at Lakeland Car Company. He dedicated his free time to his favorite hobbies. He loved bowling, and for many years he and Shirley traveled to participate in ABC tournaments. He enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors, and in 1985 he and Shirley relocated to their current home at Gun Lake.

Roger and Shirley shared a love for travel. They especially enjoyed vacations in Florida where they have wintered for the last seven years. Aside from his Cadillac, Roger's condo was his favorite possession. He loved spending his time on the water, riding around on one of his three pontoon boats. When he went fishing in Florida, he was usually accompanied by his close pals Roy Droge, Jim Bouma, and Rog Rosema. He also loved sependiong time with hi scousin, Tom Vanden Bos in Grand Rapids. Roger also worked at a golf course in Florida. For one thing, he loved golf - and for another, his job allowed him to play for free! In Michigan he was a member of the Yankee Springs Golf Course where he participated in many outings with his son Todd.

Roger provided his family with countless memories that they will continue to treasure for many years. Todd loved the way that his father would laugh and smile whenever someone mistook them for brothers. All of the children remember the way that Roger would tiptoe into their rooms at night to turn off their fans. Of course, the kids would get out of bed to turn the fans back on once he left the room. The entire family spent many afternoons at the A&W Stand on Leonard NW, eating hot dogs and drinking cold root beer. Shirley fondly remembers the times that she and Roger spent cruising through the downtown circuit in the Cadillac.

Roger celebrated each day of his life. He never lost sight of the many blessings in his life. Over the years, he developed many close friendships. His family was always the center of his life, and he found the reward for his hard work in their warm company. In his later years he was thrilled to see his family grow with the blessing of several grandchildren. The greatest day of his life was always the birth of his latest grandkid.

Roger treasured these words from John 14. "Do not let your hearts be troubled, Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be with me where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."

Roger died unexpectedly on Friday, June 2, 2006. He is survived by his wife Shirley Harmsen Muilenburg,, children Shari and Steve Raap of Zeeland, Todd and Mary Ellen Muilenburg of Grand Rapids, Kurt and Janice Muilenburg of Wyoming, Brad Muilenburg of Newaygo, Beth Anne and Pat Coughlin of Dorr, sixteen grandchildren, his mother Bernice Muilenburg of Grand Rapids, his brother David and Joyce Muilenburg of Georgia and several nieces and nephews.
