Irwin Goram Portenier passed away July 10, 1990, at the age of 84. He was born to John R. Portenier and Ora Viola Hock Portenier February 8, 1906, at Gretna. He grew to manhood in Phillips County and attended Greenwood School.
Irwin was united in marriage to Doris Hazel Helms December 28, 1927. During the early years of their marriage, while residing in Phillips County, they cared for several foster children and farmed until moving to Homedale, Idaho. While in Idaho, they operated a large dairy farm and picked fruit for many years.
Irwin and Doris returned to Phillips County in the early 1950s and made their home north of Phillipsburg, where Irwin was engaged in farming. His father made his home with them until his death in 1959. Irwin was actively involved in the Seventh Day Adventist Church until his death.
Survivors include his devoted wife, Doris of the home; three brothers: Merle of Parma, Idaho, Theodore of Alma, Nebraska and Ernest of Phillipsburg; two sisters: Mabel Day of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Dorothy White of Phillipsburg; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held for Irwin G. Portenier Friday, July 13 at 2 p.m. in Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel of Phillipsburg. The Rev. Robert Coyan and Elder Joel Tompkins officiated. "Amazing Grace," "Beyond the Sunset" and "The Old Rugged Cross" were sung by Fred R. Henrichs, who was accompanied by Helen Witmer.
Casket bearers were Mel White, Dennis Horn, Dean, Warren and Charles Portenier, Gary Stone and Terry Monroe. Honorary bearers were Lee, Tony, Brian and Clayton Taylor, Jerry Waldo, Loyd and Kenneth Johnson. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery, Phillips County, under the direction of Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel.
