John was the son of Rev. Walter Spaulding and Vera Cozier. His paternal grandparents were John Lyman Spaulding and Sarah Abbott.

"Dr. John Burton Spaulding passed away on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the age of 81 after a 15-month battle with leukemia.

Dr. Spaulding practiced internal medicine in the Helena area for 32 years. He, along with surgeons Dr. Kermit Wright and Dr. William Hoopes, founded the Helena Medical Clinic. They were soon joined by pediatrician Dr. Belle Richards. He saw the clinic grow and change over the years until he retired in 1988 at the age of 62.

Burt Spaulding was born on Jan. 7, 1927, in Helena to the Rev. Walter Spaulding, a Methodist minister, and Vera Cozier Spaulding. He was the youngest of three children. His father's ministry took the family to several Montana towns.

His mother was killed and he was severely injured in an auto accident in Great Falls when he was an infant. His father remarried Jessie Lease, organist at the Great Falls Methodist Church, and she became the only mother he ever knew.

Dr. Spaulding started high school in Bozeman and graduated from high school in Missoula as the family followed his father's church assignments. After high school, he joined the Army and was sent to Stanford University to start officer training. He went on to the Virginia Military Institute but after several months decided that it was not a good fit. He was not about to wear a coat and tie to dinner every night.

He was then sent to Europe after World War II to help with the "mop-up" operations in Germany. After returning from Europe he enrolled at University of Montana in Missoula and graduated cum laude in 1949. He then attended medical school at Washington University in St. Louis.

While in College he met Eva LaPine, a graduate student in physical education. Eva had grown up on a farm in eastern Montana, near Circle, where she had graduated from high school. Eva had graduated from the University of Montana, but returned to graduate school to "get her master's and her man!" Burt and Eva were then married in Missoula by Burt's father at the Methodist Church. The couple then returned to St. Louis while he finished medical school and graduated in 1953. Their daughter, Sandy, was born at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. His internship was done at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio. His son, Steve, was born that year.

His residency in internal medicine was completed at the Denver Veterans Hospital, and his youngest child, Rick, joined the family.

After his training was completed he accepted a position at the Veterans Hospital at Fort Harrison in Helena. At the VA he met surgical colleagues Hoopes and Wright, and a lasting relationship began. The three decided to open the Helena Medical Clinic together in 1960, where they all completed their medical careers. Dr. Spaulding was the first to implant a permanent cardiac pacemaker in Helena!

Burt Spaulding was a true outdoorsman. He was very proud that he and Eva climbed Granite Peak, Montana's highest mountain. Burt loved to spend the cold winters playing chess and won two state championships. He and his family enjoyed backpacking, traveling to historic sites and family ski trips. The family would often rent a cabin at Bridger Bowl, where he greatly enjoyed his two grandchildren, Michael and Christelle Follette, from Sacramento, Calif.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eva; daughter, Sandy Follette, M.D., son-in-law David Follette, M.D., from Sacramento, Calif.; and son, Steve, from Helena.

Dr. Spaulding is also survived by his sister, Kay Barker in Florida.

He was preceded in death by his son, Rick, and sister, Evagene. A private celebration of his life with his immediate family will be held. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a contribution in his name to the Cancer Treatment Center at St. Peter's Hospital."
