Son of Arnold S. Bowie and Jane Ridlon, he married Helen Graves in 1868.
A Civil War Veteran, he enlisted as Private in Company D, Maine 16th Infantry Regiment on 14 Aug 1862. Promoted to Full Corporal. Promoted to Full Sergeant. Mustered out on 5 Jun 1865 at Arlington Heights, Virginia.
