Enoch Solomon Mathis
Bro. Enoch Solomon Mathis, was born near Wilksboro in Wilks Co., North Carolina, January 1st 1824, and died on Spring Creek, Phelps Co., MO, May 15th 1895 at 11-15 a.m., aged 71 ys, 4 ms, and 14 ds. He was a son of Thomas and Annie (Davis) Mathis and was of a family of 10 child. 2 of whom survive him, namely Mr. Thomas Mathis, Jr. of Dallas Co., MO, and Miss Rosanna Mathis of Phelps Co. In 1848 Bro. Mathis came to MO with his brother, James J. Mathis and wife, and in 1850 he went back to N.C. and in 1853, he came back to Phelps Co., MO, and in 1855 he went to Dallas Co., MO and March 30th 1856 he was married to Miss Charlotte Wayman, who died Oct. 29th 1893, aged 58 ys, 5 ms, and 29 ds. Bro. and sister Mathis had a family of 9 children, 7 of whom survive him and 13 grand children are living. In 1851 or 2 he experienced the Christian religion and joined the Shady Grove Bap. Ch. of Wilks Co., N.C. and at the time of his death was a member of the Pleasant Grove Bap. Ch. Singing and remarks by J.J. Watts and prayer by Rev. A. Hendrix at the house and singing and prayer by Watts and remarks by Rev. A. Hendrix at the Smith Cemetery May 16th 1895, at the house at 12 noon and at the cemetery at 3 p.m.
