LONDONDERRY, N.H. -- Jessica L. Pollman was a best friend to her little sister, Sarah, loved to take her black Labrador, Riley, for walks and would unwind by playing classical music on her family's Gilbransen piano.
She was 18, pretty, smart and a senior at Londonderry High. She was planning to attend either Keene State College, Plymouth State, or the University of New Hampshire next year to study education.

"We were in the midst of looking at colleges,'' says Jessica's mother, Deborah L. Pollman. "She worked very hard, was an avid reader and loved to write.''

Jessica's life ended Thursday, when she was pronounced dead at Elliot Hospital in Manchester from injuries she sustained in a Sept. 29 car crash on Londonderry's Mammoth Road. A 76-year-old Manchester man was killed at the scene of the crash.

Police said Leo Spielberg, 901 Union St., Manchester, may have suffered a medical emergency while driving his Ford Explorer, which crashed head-on into the car in which Jessica was a passenger.

Jessica, who resided at 17 Hazelnut Lane, was sitting in the back seat of the car. She was accompanied by Rachel McCarter, 17, of 32 Shasta Drive, Londonderry, and Rachel's mother, Frances McCarter, also of 32 Shasta Drive. The McCarters are recovering from the injuries they sustained in the crash.

Mrs. Pollman said her daughter died from "impact injuries" caused by the crash.

"When she went into the hospital the physicians said the seat belt saved her life. The seat belt caused her injuries. She worsened over the week," Mrs. Pollman said.

Jessica was devoted to her family, said her mother.

She cherished the time she spent with her sister, said her mother, and was the biggest fan of her 9-year-old brother Nathan, who is making a name for himself in Londonderry's youth soccer leagues.

"Her sister was her best friend. They were perfect together," Mrs. Pollman said. "And she was so good with my son... She put us ahead of everything.''

Jessica was an accomplished pianist, having taken lessons for 12 years. She also liked to ride the horses at Senator Bell Farm in Chester.

"She was a list maker. She liked her life organized,'' said Mrs. Pollman.

Jessica kept a spiral notebook that served as her daily organizer. Each day she would write down what she wanted to accomplish. During the last year a constant item of her agenda was taking Riley for a walk. She also scheduled plenty of time to study.

The only subject she did not do well in, said her mother, was math.

She excelled in all other areas.

"She got almost all A's and a B in math,'' Mrs. Pollman said. "She was a very kind person.''

At the top of each page in the notebook Jessica would write down quotes she thought were important or significant. At the top of one page from a day last January, she wrote, "Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness; Kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile."

The quote comes from Mother Teresa.

Calling hours for Jessica will be conducted at the Peabody Funeral Home, 290 Mammoth Road, Londonderry, tomorrow from 2 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Londonderry.
