Born Marian Morrow to Charles Morrow and Fannie Bell Balsinger, who were not married at the time (although they subsequently did marry). Marian was given to Charles' older brother and his wife, George and Elizabeth Morrow, who were childless, to raise as their adoptive daughter. They renamed her Stella Edna Morrow. She was married five times, and divorced from her first three husbands. Her only child was Robert Brown, born to her first marriage with John Ira Brown. After her divorce, her son went to live with Stella's adoptive parents, who changed his name to George Tomas Morrow Jr. and raised him as their son. By 1930, Stella had reverted to her birth name of Marian, and was reunited with her son.
