Richard, a decorated NAVY pilot, served four tours in Vietnam. He died at the VA Medical Center at Bay Pines. He had been under their care for nearly three years. His death was related to complications due to Agent Orange. A seventeen-year NAVY veteran, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Richard was born in Gainesville and moved to St. Petersburg with his mother and step-father. He graduated from Northeast High School and took classes at St. Petersburg Junior College. He joined the NAVY and earned a scholarship to study at the University of West Florida. He received a degree in political science, earned a NAVY commission and learned to fly helicopters. After returning from the military, he worked for Sears, Roebuck, and Company and spent eight years with Savings of America. He left due to his health. Richard attended Northeast Presbyterian Church and was a member of Pinellas Community Church, Toastmasters International, and Better Builders Association. Survivors include his wife of thirty years; two sons; a half-brother; and a grandson.
