Bedford was born in Rusk County, Texas, to the late Bruce and Ama Lee Burton. He graduated from Henderson High School in 1952, and then served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959. He worked for Jones Ford before going into private business, wholesaling and retailing used cars.
Bedford moved to Houston in approximately 1978, and sold used cars there. In 1999, he semi-retired and moved back to Henderson, and reopened his old longtime car lot in Henderson.
He was preceded in death by brother, A.B. "Buck" Burton; and sisters, Anita Baton and Janelle Speights.
Survivors include his sons, Clay Burton and wife, Mary, of Kilgore, and Scott Burton and wife, Lori, of Jasper; grandchildren: Josh Burton, Jada Burton, Claire Burton, and Sam Burton; sister, Wynette Kendrick, of Henderson; a niece; and two nephews. K18
