James Snider, born in 1840, was the second child born to Jacob Snider and Mary House Snider. His brother, William Hutchinson Snider, was born in 1838.
Following the death of his father in 1847, his mother later married Elijah Shambaugh giving James three half-brothers: Isaac B. Shambaugh, Samuel Albert Shambaugh, and Joseph Jasper Matthew Shambaugh.
On October 31, 1861, at the age of 21, James enlisted in the Union Army and fought during the Civil War with Company B, 2nd Regiment, Maryland Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade with the rank of Private.
He was a casualty of the Civil War and died on 1 Jan 1862.
