Burnett (Bernard) J. Johnson served in Company B. 17th Illinois Cavalry in the Civil War.

He enlisted Oct 20, 1863 in Chicago, IL. giving his age as 18. He was mustered into Co. B. 17th IL Cavalry at St. Charles, IL on Jan 22, 1864 for 3 years service. He was described as 5' 9" tall with dark hair, black eyes, and light complexion, a sailor by trade. His regiment served primarily west of the Mississippi and he was mustered out at Ft. Leavenworth, KS., on Dec 15, 1865.

In the 1880 census of Cook Co., IL. Bernard is listed as a 36 year old store clerk born in Sweden in 1848, residing with his wife Carrie age 25 born in NY.

On Oct 17, 1883 Bernard married in Cook Co., IL., Mary J. Granger age 25 born in 1858. Bernard was listed as 36. Whether his first wife died or they divorced is unknown at this time.

On Dec 8, 1884 Bernard received an Army Invalid Pension for his service in the Civil War. Following his death, his wife Mary J. Johnson received an Army Widows Pension beginning on March 24, 1897.

When Bernard died on March 18, 1897 in Cook Co., IL., his death certificate stated he was 50 years old, a conductor by trade, and buried in Graceland Cemetery the same day.
