Joshua Coley was about twenty-five and Ann Wincey Coley was about twenty-one when they married in 1831 in North Carolina. * Some think they were first cousins.

The 1840 census revealed Jousha was employed in agriculture. Joshua's widowed mother, Nancy was living with them in Anson County, North Carolina. Two people in the household could not read or write. Household members: Joshua Coly (30-39), Wincey (20-29), George (5-9), William (under 5), Nancy (5-9), Sarah (under 5) and Nancy Coley (50-59).

They moved to Tennessee before their son, James was born in 1846.

The 1850 census of November 1, revealed Joshua was a miller and their personal property value was $300. They were living in District 13, Jefferson County, Tennessee and his mother was still living with them. Joshua and Winsey were born in North Carolina.
