Leota Elzina Gabbert was born July 11, 1879 in Schuyler County to Elijah and Susannah Garrett Ambrosius. She passed away April 11, 1961, at the age of 81 years and 9 months after a brief illness. She was one of four children. At an early age she went with her parents to Kansas for a few years. After returning to Illinois, she attended the country schools. On August 16, 1899, she was married at the home of her parents to George Gabbert. They started housekeeping on a farm near Rushville, IL. With the exception of one year near Augusta and 10 in North Dakota, they farmed in Schuyler County until 15 years ago when they bought a home in Rushville and retired. They celebrated their 60th Anniversary in 1959. She was a great lover of flowers and spent many happy hours with them. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Savior and later became a member of the Rushville Christian Church where she attended as long as she was able. Since her husband became an invalid one year ago, she has devoted her time to caring for him. The last of October they moved into the home of Mr. Marion Lerch where they were together until her death. She leaves to mourn her passing, her invalid husband and the following children: Beulah E. Gabbert Richardson, Rudy Mae Gabbert wife of Arnold Clayton, and Kenneth Gabbert all of Camden, Delilah Gabbert, wife of Ralph Payne of Rushville, and Dewaine Gabbert of Rock Island. There are eighteen grandchildren,twenty-six great-grandchildren, one brother, Thomas Ambrosius of Huntsville, Illinois, and also nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, William Ambrosius, and a son-in-Law, George Richardson. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a good friend and neighbor and will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
