VIVIAN BAILES , 94, of Overland Park, KS, passed away February 15, 2006. Private
burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating Vivian 's
life will be held on Sunday, February 26, at 1:30 p.m., at Bonfils Chapel,
Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St., Kansas City, MO, and the family will
receive friends immediately thereafter. Vivian was born May 21, 1911, in Eugene,
OR. In addition to Eugene, OR, throughout her childhood she lived in Delta, CO,
Anaconda and Hamilton, MT, and Pomeroy, WA, where she graduated high school.
Vivian attended Northwest Christian College in Eugene, OR, where she met her
husband, the late Reverend Ira Bailes . Vivian was an ordained minister for over
70 years in the Disciples of Christ (Christian) Church. Together, she and her
late husband pastored churches in Julesburg and Ft. Morgan, CO, Albuquerque, NM,
and most recently, The Merriam Christian Church in Merriam, KS. Vivian and her
late husband were active in a number of interdenominational activities where
they worked to build bridges among various faiths. Vivian was an accomplished
pianist and had a lifelong love of music, especially opera, having first been
introduced to it at the age of 10 by a traveling opera company visiting
Hamilton, MT. Vivian loved knowledge and its pursuit. She was an ardent student
of the Bible, English Literature, and loved to read biographies and history.
Late in life Vivian took up swimming and for a number of years logged many
miles, ultimately becoming a "poster child" in support of wellness programs
benefiting the elderly. Vivian's proudest accomplishments were her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a remarkable woman with a gentle
spirit who loved her family with singleminded devotion and compassion. Vivian
deeply touched each and every member of her family and left her loving imprint
on four generations. She will be deeply, deeply missed. Vivian was preceded in
death by her husband, Ira J. Bailes ; and her son, Kendall E. Bailes . She is
survived by her daughter, Elaine Kieffer, of the home; granddaughter, Julia Gass
and her spouse, James Gass, Prairie Village, KS; grandson, Jonathan Kieffer and
his spouse, Jacqueline Lewis, Lake Quivira, KS; and greatgrandchildren, Jason
and Jenna Gass, and Gabrielle, Sophie and Vivian Kieffer. She also is survived
by her sister, Mrs. Ila Bovee, Seattle, WA. In lieu of flowers, the family
suggest contributions to The Community Christian Church, Food Pantry or
