Arthur Vernon Whiteley, 83, of Austin, died May 30, 2006 in Temple, Texas at the Olin E. Teague VA Hospital. He was born Feb 7, 1923 in Tennessee Valley, TX to William Jesse and Eva Pearl Cowan Whiteley during a snowstorm.

Arthur worked on the family farm as well as a dairy farm until he entered the United States Army in 1943. As a medic and expert gunner he was a member of the greatest generation who helped save our country and the world from tyranny during WWII. His company the 38th CAV.RCN.SQ.MECZ., came ashore at Omaha Beach Normandy on D-Day+2 and this highly decorated unit was the 1st American forces to liberate Paris on August 24, 1944. For his heroic service he received many commendations and medals including the American Theater Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, and World War II Victory Medal. He discharged from the army at the rank of Sgt.

After the war, he married Evelyn Wood of Cleburne, TX. He completed Watch and Jewelry Repair School in Dublin, TX. He worked in many Texas towns until he settled his family in Austin, TX and went on to open Whiteley's Watch and Jewelry Repair until he retired. Retirement did not stop him. Throughout the years he kept busy by taking care of his family, taking care of his land and tractor, becoming an expert weatherman and buying and selling gold all over the central Texas area. In recent years, he purchased a personal computer and taught himself how to perform many tasks just by reading self-teaching guides. Once he accomplished these skills he began reconnecting with former army buddies as well as increasing communication with family members who he truly cherished.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Pearline Whiteley, Dorothy Clowers, Marie Mangerich, Opal Massengale, Ruby Humphrey, Jewel Trapp; brothers, Fred Whiteley and Ira Whiteley.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn; daughter, Sondra and husband, Don Holsey; granddaughters, Trellisa M. Woods and Margaret Terezah Holsey; grandson, Richard Vernon Woods; great grandchildren, Issacc Lee Angel Woods and Alexandra Jule Flores; brother, Joe Amos Whiteley; sister, Irene Waskow; sister-in-law, Jean Russell; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Honoring Mr. Whiteley as pallbearers were James Ira Whiteley, Ron Whiteley, Chris Green, Michael Green, Marlon Henriquez and Mario Garcia.
