Margarette Elizabeth Tucker Jacobs was born June 26, 1917 in Quitman, Texas. to Benjamin Joseph and Velah Elizabeth Goldsmith Tucker. She was the middle child of two older sisters and two younger brothers. She completed high school at Fluvannah, Texas and worked her way through Hardin Simmons University, graduating in 1940 with a degree in English. Mrs. Jacobs began her long teaching career in Buena Vista, Texas.
On July 29, 1944 Margarette Tucker married Howard Rhea Jacobs in Balmorhea, Texas. They moved to Odessa, where she began teaching at Crockett Junior High. In 1959 Mrs. Jacobs transferred to Bonham Junior High where she completed a 44 year teaching career. During this career she impacted the lives of many students, teaching them respect and to be proud as well as to improve language skills.
After her children were raised, Mrs. Jacobs studied watercolor painting, attending many classes and retreats, developing painting friends along with works of art. At the same time she devoted more attention to writing short stories and poems . She leaves us books illustrated and written for her grandchildren as well as a collection of writings. She explained why she wrote, "Most of my writing is based on events in my life. I want my children and grandchildren to have an understanding of my life as a child and historical events that affected my life."
Mrs. Jacobs was a member of Delta Iota Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma; past president of Delta Iota; lifetime member of Texas State Teachers Association; Texas Retired Teachers Association; First Baptist Church of Odessa since 1944; Naomi Sunday School Class; Snappy Stitchers Crochet Group; past president of Ector County Sheriff's Posse Ladies Auxiliary; Old Timers of Ector County; and Permian Basin Radio Society.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard; and parents, Benjamin and Velah Tucker; brothers, J. C. Tucker and Bill Tucker; and sisters, Maybelle Ainsworth and Jenelle Nanny. She is survived by daughters and their husbands, Dianna & Albert Janke of Kennewick, WA and Karen & Richard Mayo of Odessa; grandchildren Jacob Mayo & wife Lindsey of Odessa, Ethan Janke & wife Rene' of Burbank, WA, Jennifer Wangler & husband Tim of Nampa, ID, Sheila Sullivan & husband Daniel of Odessa; and one great-grandson, Cooper Rhea Sullivan of Odessa; and special nieces, Kayloma, Kathy, & Karry Yancy of Odessa. Mrs. Jacobs is also survived by sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Nation of Abilene and Valjean Manning of Ft. Worth; and several nieces & nephews.
The family invites you to share in celebration of Mrs. Jacobs' life at a graveside service at 9:30 A.M. Monday, June 5, 2006 at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 A.M. at First Baptist Church of Odessa with Reverend Johnny Young officiating. A visitation with family will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
The family suggests memorials be given to First Baptist Church of Odessa, Alzheimer's Association, Arthritis Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
