Martha Ann was the daughter of David Covington and Frances Ivey Covington. She married John West Gilley (8/2/1829 - 1/28/1861), a farmer and laborer in the Turkey Cock Creek area of Henry County, VA. They were married on 12/21/1854 and had four children. Two of the children died as infants.

John West Gilley died from consumption on 1/28/1861.

Martha worked as a seamstress for local merchant, George K. Jones, to support the family. Martha and her two children, Hardin and Anna, also lived with George and his wife as boarders. She married her second husband, David H. Roland, a farmer, on 2/12/1871. They had two children.

David H. Roland was the son of Cager Roland and Anna C. Roland.

Cause Of Death: Childbed Fever (bacterial infection of the female reproductive tract following childbirth or miscarriage)
