Martha Rebecca "Mattie" (Branscum) Balentine was the daughter of Emanuel Mavity Branscum and Mary Jane Rorie. Married: Andrew George Jackson "Jack" Balentine 7 May 1911. Jack and Mattie had 11 children: Ruthie, Floyd, Leoria, William "Hugh", Nancy Opal, Rubie Elviria, Trilba, Vernon Hubert, James Alvord, Pauline, and Forest Dean. Mattie loved to help her neighbors and friends. She would not tolerate gossiping and told her children, "If you can't say something good, don't say anything." She insisted that her girls learn to sew. If they didn't have the stitches the way she wanted them, she'd tell them to, "Rip it out and lick the calf over."
