Alice Kathryn Turner Smith was born January 27, 1921, in Greenville Mississippi; passed away peacefully at Indywood Glen Personal Care Home on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, in Greenwood, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Abner Ireland and Clara Lee Johnson Ireland; brothers Robert Ireland, Jr. and William Johnson Ireland; husband of 43 years, David Turner; and husband of 20 years, Ellis Smith. She is survived by two children, David Turner, Jr. (Mary) of Hattiesburg, and Ada Lee Cates (Charles) of Nesbit.; 7 grandchildren: Drew and Stuart Wichman of Albuquerque, Merrie Ellen Warner of Southaven, Alice Barr of Oxford, Allen Fillingame of Starkville, Tara Cooper and Ben Turner of Hattiesburg. She is also survived by 10 great grandchildren, Emily Detweiler, Katy Detweiler, David Wichman, Lydia Wichman, Anja Wichman, Simon Cooper, Anniston Cooper, Elijah Cooper, Sophia Turner and Kaylee Turner. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Alice Kathryn grew up on Elena Plantation near Metcalf and graduated from Greenville Public Schools and MSCW. She continued her education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois and Julliard School of Music in New York. After marrying David Turner she settled in Greenville, Mississippi, taught piano lessons and played the organ at First Baptist Church. After her husband’s death in 1989 she continued her music career in Greenville until she became reacquainted with a friend from her childhood. She and Ellis Smith married in 1994 and lived in Greenwood. They moved into Indywood Glen in 2011 and lived there until their deaths in 2015.

Alice Kathryn loved music, loved teaching music, and loved playing the organ and harp. She was loved by everyone who met her and had the heart of a servant, always wanting to be kind and help people. The family gives special thanks to the staff at Indywood for being so sweet to her and taking such good care of her and Ellis.

Visitation will be at Wilson and Knight Funeral Home from 1p.m. to 2p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015, followed by the funeral at Wilson & Knight Chapel at 2 p.m. There will be a graveside service at Leland-Stoneville Cemetery.
