He was born December 16, 1868 in Lumsdeen Village, Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen, Scotland, son of Peter and Elspeth Shearer Dunbar.
At age 14 he was baptized a member of the LDS church in the Dee river by Elder McKay, father of LDS President David O. McKay who was serving a mission in Scotland. In 1882, George, with three brothers and one sister came to the United States, living first in Paradise.
Apprenticed as a clerk in Scotland, George Dunbar sought this kind of work and became a clerk in the Logan ZCMI, the first co-op store in the valley.
Married September 1882 Lillian Annie Hyde in Logan LDS, Temple. They became parents of ten children. Lillian died April 1942.
Married July 10, 1953, Mrs Christina Anderson Dowdle.
In Logan, George helped establish a men's clothing store Dunbar and Robinson. And in 1912, the name Campbell was added. George and his brother-in-law, J. E. Hyde, established a men's clothing store known as Dunbar and Hyde which operated successfully for years.
George served in the Sixth ward bishopric. In 1896 he was called on a Southern States mission.

George was interested in light harness horses. In 1905, with Thomas Smart, Moses Thatcher Jr, Thomas H Smith and Riley Kent they organized the Cache Valley Driving Association. They designed and built the base of the race course in the present Cache County Fair Grounds. When the Logan Chamber of Commerce proposed sponsoring an annual county fair, George was instrumental in raising funds to construct the buildings and stalls for the first fair held fall 1911. For the next 20 years George and his associates, with special appropriations from the county extended the building program, improved the grounds and conducted a successful county fair each year.
