Henry Latham Rucker, Jr., 88, of Aiken, S.C., died May 29, 2006 at Eden Gardens Assisted Living Center. He was born in Bedford, Va. on March 17, 1918 to the late Henry Latham Rucker, Sr., and Frances Blanche Saunders. He was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1940. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years. He moved to Aiken, S.C. in 1951 with the Savannah River Plant where he worked as an engineer in the Power Department. He retired from the DuPont Company in 1980 with 37 years of service. He was a member of the First Christian Church, American Legion Post No. 26, and the Shade Tree Antique Car Club of Augusta. His love of history was represented in the time he spent as a docent at the Aiken County Museum. His many hobbies and interests included a love of music, football, coin collecting, and chair caning. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Vail Rucker; daughters, Nancy Rucker Goslen, and Andrew, of Aiken, S.C., Elizabeth Rucker Bierbaum, and Clark, of Charlotte, N.C.; his brother, Robert Saunders Rucker, Sr., and Margie, Bedford, Va.; nephews, Robert S. Rucker, Jr., of Houston, Texas, James L. Rucker, and Anne, of Crozet, Va.; and nieces, Ann R. O'Connor, and Tim, of Atlanta, Ga., and Mary Elizabeth V. Longwood, and Claude, of Madison Heights, Va. Visitation will be held at Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home on Pine Log Road on Wednesday, May 31, 2006 from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home on Thursday, June 1, 2006 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Don Morris of First Christian Church and the Rev. Cathy Cole Aiken will officiate. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Bedford, Va. on Saturday, June 3, 2006 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Bill Moore of Bedford Christian Church will officiate. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks for the excellent care provided by Eden Gardens Assisted Living Center and Hitchcock Hospice of Aiken.
