ALFRED L. LINO, SR., 92

Al Lino passed away in his home in Gainesville, Florida on Friday, April 3, 2015. Al had moved to Gainesville after retirement in order to be near his beloved University of Florida “Gators.” A Bull Gator for many decades, Al Lino adopted the University of Florida as his school when, as a writer for the St. Petersburg Times, he often covered sports. He was extremely proud when both his daughter and grand-daughter both graduated from Florida and when he received the honor of a Lifetime Membership in the Gator Alumni Association.

Born in Newark, N.J. on St. Patrick’s day, March 17, 1923, he grew up in that area and later attended Columbia University, managed a band and had a radio show. With the advent of WWII in 1941 he tried enlisting in the Armed Services but was declined due to a heart murmur. Undaunted, he went to work for the U.S. Government.

Following WWII, Lino moved to St. Petersburg, Florida where he married, began a family and was employed by the St. Petersburg Times as a reporter. Ever the entrepreneur, Lino learned over the years that he could make more money writing ads instead of writing news stories.

Despite being a new father, Lino opened his own agency, Alfred L. Lino & Associates and, in time, proved to be an advertising pioneer on the West Coast of Florida, making he very first television commercial ever to be shown on local television, handling the advertising accounts of the City of St. Petersburg, Brevard County as well as the State of Florida among many others. Over the years he hired many young advertising men who went on to open their own agencies while the Lino agency continued to grow with numerous local, national and international clients and opened an office in New York City.

Later on Lino sold the agency and re-emerged as All Advertising Associates, Inc. specializing in promotions and reciprocal trade advertising. Starting out in a small houseboat in the St. Petersburg Marina with one part time employee, he grew the business and soon moved to a 65 foot houseboat on Tierra Verde where he had 5 employees, to a larger office in the Tierra Verde Shopping Center and ultimately to his office building on Central Avenue with 10 employees and a second office in Miami, Florida with 4 employees.

Al Lino is survived by his wife, Linda Lino, daughters Paula Williams, Gloria Burns and husband John; son Alfred L. Lino, Jr., and Connie; grandchildren, Matthew Williams, Christina Burns, Catherine Burns, Angela Miller, Alfred L. Lino III and Michael Lino; great grand children Kurt and Kyle Williams, Kayla Miller, Louis Lino and Allison Bean.

A visitation will be held, Tuesday, April 7, 2015 from 5-8 PM at the Gee & Sorensen Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held 1 PM on April 8, 2015 at the St. Judes Cathedral Our Ladies Chapel. The interment will follow at Royal Palm Cemetery South. Gee & Sorensen FH
