A successful hardware merchant for most of his life, Nick Schneider owned an eponymouos store at 22 4th Street in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Six years after his death, on January 10, 1968, the store was destroyed by fire.

Nick began as a farmer, but he left the farm and the house was razed after the tragic deaths of his wife and three young children in 1913. He subsequently married Elizabeth Gabriels (1884-1920), and then Dorothea, known in the family as aunt Dora (1877-1962).
