Rolla P. Hinman, about 75, former owner of the Hinman Knitting Co. and operator of the Hinman Bros. dry goods store, died Thursday in Los Angeles, Calif. according to word received here.
The body was cremated in California and the ashes will be brought to Newton for burial.
Mr. Hinman was born in Richland county, a son of Dr. and Mrs. H.S. Hinman. He opened a dry goods store in Newton in 1893 and came to Decatur in 1901.
The Hinman Bros. store was first located in the old Arcade building on North Main street. It later moved to the 100 block North Water street and finally to the 200 block on North Water street in 1906. Four brothers of Mr. Hinman were associated with him in business.
The Hinman Knitting Co. was organized in 1908 and the firm erected a two story brick building at Church and Cerro Gordo streets. The following year, the company moved to Ft. Wayne, Ind.
Mr. Hinman's wife, the former Anna Strohm, died in Chicago in 1944.
Mr. Hinman leaves two sisters, Mrs. C.L. Bankson and Mrs. J.R. Parkinson, both of California.
