Betty J. (Westfall) Gooding, 76, Fairway, KS, died Thursday, February 12, 1998, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, at Southminster Presbyterian Church, 6306 Roe Ave., Prairie Village, KS. Visitation will be 2-3 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Western Missouri, 2007 Broadway, Kansas City, MO 64108.
Betty was born July 25, 1921, in Kansas City, KS. She was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, and the Overland Trailblazers Club. She served for a number of years as chairperson on the Argentine High School reunion committee.
Betty served as assistant troop leader of Brownie Troop 671 of the Kansas City area council of Girl Scouts. She also served as assistant troop leader for Intermediate and Senior Girl Scout Troop 687. She was designated troop camping chairperson from 1955 to 1963. She was also a council day camp volunteer, and was beloved by the scouts and leaders.
Betty's devotion to her children and education led her to become president of the Highlands Elementary School PTA. She also served on the northeast Johnson County area and state councils of the PTA.
After raising her family, she worked at Southwestern Bell as a marketing representative, and retired from AT&T in 1984. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, James S. Gooding, of the home; son, James S. Gooding II, Alice Springs, Australia; daughters, Linda Hudson, Ramstein Air Base, Ramstein, Germany, Janet Deines, Anaheim, CA, and Martha Black, Fort Wayne, IN; brother, Willis Westfall, Kansas City, KS; and eight grandchildren.
