The 197th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Chase (Columbus), Ohio, and mustered into service March 28, 1865. The unit left Ohio for Washington, D. C., April 25, 1865, and was assigned to a Provisional Brigade, 9th Army Corps with duty at Washington and Alexandria until May 11, 1865. The unit moved to Dover, Delaware with duty at Camp Harrington until May 31, 1865. The unit was attached to 3rd Separate Brigade, 8th Army Corps, Middle Department, to May, 1865. Moved to Havre de Grace, Maryland, May 31, 1865 and assigned to duty as guard on the line of the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore R.R. by detachments till July of 1865. Moved to Baltimore, Maryland, July 3, 1865 with duty as guards at camps and hospitals around the city until July 31, 1865, when the unit was mustered out.
