Thomas William Ogdon, 89, a resident of Sherwood, Arkansas died peacefully in the early morning hours of May 12, 2014. At the time of his death Thomas was a resident in the Northridge Healthcare and Rehab Center in North Little Rock, AR. He was born on November 11, 1924 to Lonnie and Ruby Ogdon of Muldrow, Oklahoma.
When Thomas was young his mother and father separated. He attended Cushing Elementary School and Graduated from Cushing High School. Thomas and his twin brother James were typical boys as is evidenced in a story he recounted about the time that he and James cut down a tree that their friend had climbed because he dared them to do it. Fortunately their friend suffered only a broken arm. Thomas’s younger sister June was always dear to him. In 1947, while picking oranges in Florida with his brother James and his stepfather Ernest Hunter, Thomas met Muriel Tyler from Quitman, Arkansas and began courting her. He proposed to her the night before she was to return to Arkansas and they were married shortly thereafter. After he retired from the United States Air Force Thomas attended Arkansas State Teacher’s College in Conway, Arkansas where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Thomas was drafted into the Army in 1943. After basic and advanced training he was shipped to England where he briefly served as an aircraft radio repair technician. In early 1945 Thomas was transferred to the 5th Infantry Division, where served as an infantryman until the end of the war in Europe. He was discharged from the Army in the summer of 1945 and worked odd jobs until he enlisted in the Air Force in 1948. Thomas rose to the rank of Master Sergeant while serving in telecommunications centers stateside and overseas until he retired from the Air Force in 1963. Thomas worked briefly for the Internal Revenue Service in 1967 and then took a position as an auditor with the Arkansas Joint Legislative Audit Division where he worked until he retired in 1987. There, he was well known for his diligence and accurate work and was once named “Ledger Jockey of the Year” by his colleagues. In his later years Thomas and his wife Muriel were active in the Little Rock German American Club, Clogging, and Square Dancing. He served for several years as a poll worker during elections in Pulaski County AR. Thomas was an active member of Kellogg Valley Baptist Church in Sherwood, AR. He was also a member of the 5th Division Association and The American Legion. Thomas was an avid reader of history and loved a good joke. He enjoyed collecting prints and figurines of Native American people and cowboys from the old west. John Wayne was his favorite actor. Thomas is survived by his wife of 67 years Muriel Ogdon, his daughter Janice Emerson (Michael) of Azle, TX, his sons David Ogdon (Hazel) of Memphis, TN and Brice Ogdon of Jacksonville, AR; five grandchildren, Curtis Emerson of Houston, TX, Emily Emerson (Danny Yang) of McKinney, TX, Dorothy May (Stephen) of Honolulu, HI, Richard Ogdon of Denver, CO and Tyler Ogdon of Honolulu, HI and his brother Jim Hunter (Lucretia) of Cushing, OK.
He is predeceased by one grandchild Laura Muriel Ogdon, his twin brother James Ogdon, his step-sister Helen Davis, step-brother Delbert Hunter and his sister June Ogdon Yaunt. Visitation will be held on Friday May 16, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Griffin Leggett Rest Hills Funeral Home, 7724 Landers Road, North Little Rock, AR 72117.
