John Clay was painting the sides of the Mansard roof of a new building in Lawrence, First National Bank, when a plank tilted and John Clay and Howard Shepherd fell 5 stories to their death. John died immediately of a broken neck (and also a broken arm and leg) and Howard died an hour later. John was about 30 years old and left a wife and one son. The day before the accident, John expressed some misgivings about going upon the scaffold at such a height.
