Alvin R. Abbott, 85, passed away suddenly, March 28, 2015 at his home in Joliet, IL.

He was born May 12, 1929 in Chicago, IL to Richard and Lauretta (Lieser) Abbott.

He graduated from Lane Tech High School in Chicago and attended Park College in Kansas City, MO where he received his bachelor’s degree in Speech and Dramatic Arts. From there, Al moved on to the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago where he received a Diploma in Theology in 1956. In 1975, he received a Master’s in Divinity and in 1980 he received his Doctorate of Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary. Rev. Abbott served at First Presbyterian Church in Green Valley, IL, First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, IL and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Joliet, IL where he still served as Pastor Emeritus. Even in retirement, Rev Abbott continued to serve many Presbyterian churches in their needs.

He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Stronghold Camp & Conference Center and served the IL Camp & Conference Center; the Joliet Ecumenical Clergy Association; was active in various governing bodies within the Presbyterian Church; Joliet Project Pride; and was a part of the Joliet Arsenal Regional Advisory Board during the clean-up of the old arsenal property.

Al met Donna Jean Bailey while serving at the Green Valley Presbyterian Church. They were married in 1956 and were blessed with three children; Alvin Jr. (AJ), Bradley and Chrystal.

Al was very active with his children’s school and church organizations. He also participated in community theater, and was very active in the youth and church camping ministries programs, most notably Stronghold Presbyterian Camp and Conference Center in Oregon, Illinois where he received the nickname Doc for his “marginal” first aid skills. The patient recovered and the nickname stuck.

His hobbies included reading, music, watching Professional Bull Riding (PBR), camping, travelling with family, and providing help wherever it was needed.

Al is survived by his wife Donna J. (Bailey) Abbott; two sons Al Jr. (Carol) Abbott, Normal, IL and Brad (Debra), Fort Collins, CO; one daughter Chrystal (Tom) Abbott-Ronchetti, New Lenox, IL; three grandchildren Alvin Abbott III, Derik Abbott, and Tom Ronchetti II (Xuan); two brothers George (Carol) Abbott, Valparaiso, FL and Wayne (Kay) Abbott, Bloomington, IL.

Preceding him in death were his parents Richard T. and Lauretta (Lieser) Abbott and one brother Richard T. Abbott, Jr.

Visitation will be held at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home on Thursday, April 2, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Cremation rites will be accorded. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers memorials to Stronghold Camp & Conference Center (P.O. Box 199, Oregon, IL 61061); Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp(805 S. Shields St., Fort Collins, Co 80521); First Presbyterian Church of Manteno (64 S.
