Walter Frederick Steidle was born at the Good Samaritan Hospital, in the City of Cincinnati, County of Hamilton, Ohio.

In 1943, he joined the US Navy. Assigned to the destroyer Meade, which won nine battle stars during the war. He was awarded, The Purple Heart for his wound. He was never a man to boast or brag about his heroism during WWII, which had earned him the Navy Cross.

Walter was a long time regional Vice-President for the May Department Stores in California. He either opened or acquired retail outlets in San Diego County, Orange County, Palm Desert and Las Vegas until he retired in 1991. He was a brilliant man in his field, a great philanthropist and had great class.

He loved classical music and played the piano. He had the honor to be guest conductor for the San Diego Symphony Summer Pops Orchestra one night in 1986. The United Way/CHAD honored him in 1990.

He spent his Christmas Holidays at his vacation home in Westerly, R.I.

The cause of his death at age 80, was cerebral vasculitis. He was a very special person, a hero, and loved by all. He had a gift of bringing out the best in people and he will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his lovely wife, Elaine; daughters, Tufia Elaine Steidle of Pasadena and Cynthia Ann Steidle of Cincinnati; His sons, Walter John and Steven Matthew Steidle, are both living in Ohio, also three grandchildren.

He was laid to rest on April 29, 2006 at Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego, followed by a celebration of life at the La Jolla Country Club.

On July 1, 2006, he had a Memorial Mass and Celebration of life, in Rhode Island. Many friends and relatives were in attendance.

He was originally placed in a private, Salmon-colored, marble sarcophagus, on the fourth floor of The Bible Mausoleum but was moved from the sarcophagus to the Steidle Estate Mausoleum on April 1, 2009.
