Bert Londo, Sr. is my paternal grandfather.

Bert Londo Sr was born on September 11, 1895 to Jacob Londo and Grace (nee Jansen) Londo. He was born at their residence at the time which was 56 Martha St, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Not much is know about his childhood, but when he was 21, he enlisted in the United States Army. He enlisted on June 3, 1917 in Columbus, Ohio. This was during World War I. On his enlistment record it shows that he had good horsemanship skills and they rated his character as excellent. In fact, the remarks on his enlistment record states that his "service Honest and Faithful no AWOL. He was discharged on April 12, 1919 at Fort Bliss, Texas. At that time, they paid him $215.75 and a bonus of $60.00. The military also paid for his travel back to Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Not much is known about the courtship of Bert Londo Sr. and Irene Rawn, but it must of been a relatively quick one, because Bert Londo and Irene Rawn were married less than a year after his discharge from the Army. They were married on March 2, 1920 in Muskegon, Michigan by Harry Bultema. The witnesses to their wedding were Anna and Oscar Baker. Anna was Bert's sister.
Bert Londo Sr fathered 12 children, seven of which lived into adulthood. He has been described by his children as being a great father. He supported his family by working as a railroad machinist repairing locomotives. He spent 41 years with the railroad until he was forced to retire in 1958, due to failing health. He was enrolled on the Pennsylvania Railroad Company's Roll of honor in Philadelphia, Pennsylevania on February 1st, 1959. Bert had suffered a series of strokes. Bert Londo Sr died on December 17, 1963 at Butterworth hospital at the age of 68. At that time, he and his wife Irene were living at 900 Emerald Ave, N.E. in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery.
