Maria (Mary) Magdalena Iösslin Gross was born in Eichstetten, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on December 30, 1824. On March 19, 1853, she married Wilhelm (William) Gross, also of Eichstetten. They emigrated to the USA in late 1881 or early 1882, settling in Athelstane, Kansas. Mary Gross died on September 20, 1891, having been preceded in death by her husband William, and her son William (1856-1886). Her other children were Maria (b. 1854), who remained in Germany with her husband Karl Rinklin; Luise (Louise), (1858-1952) who married August Scherzer (Schetzer) of Eichstetten and emigrated to the USA in 1883, settling in Southern California; Sophie (1863-1951), who emigrated to Kansas with her parents in 1881 or 1882, and married fellow Eichstetten native Johann Jakob (John) Hugg in 1884; and Anna Katherina (1865-1934), who emigrated with her parents and married Nathan Anthony (originally from Pennsylvania), settling in Abilene, Kansas.
