Daniel was son of Joseph and Catharine (Miller) Brooks. The family moved to St. Louis County, MO about 1844, where Daniel grew to manhood. Out the outbreak of the Civil War, Daniel served with the Missouri Infantry with his brother Joseph F., under the command of General Price.

After the war, Daniel relocated to Vernon County, MO to farm. He married Virginia Buford in 11 April 1869, in Manchester, Saint Louis County, Missouri. Daniel and Virginia had the following children born: Edward, Justine Henry, Marshall Ney, Lloyd Emery, Mary and John Buford.
